Buddies, Bridges and Brains began as a grassroots effort to find out why the standardized test results were consistently high in our middle class suburban community, and consistently low in the city schools just 25 minutes from us. The nearest city to us is Rochester, NY which has the 11th highest rate of childhood poverty in the nation. It didn't take long to see that poverty has a direct impact on the quality of education a child receives. Every program that benefits schools is more difficult to access if most of the families in a school are very low income. It also didn't take long to realize that we need eachother, and that by developing relationships across geographic boundaries we all benefit. The impact of these relationships has been consistently exciting, and we envision a day when all students have the same opportunities for basic enrichment experiences and access to school supplies, books and technology.
